The demand of manufacturing company to get organized by sustainable processes allowing to achieve their goals – manufacturing products and providing services to customers. If we think in a lower resolution about these goals, we can translate them in the list of granular goals and processes. While ERP systems are taking care of financial aspects of manufacturing and (in most cases) about procurement and manufacturing operation, PLM is focusing on the following processes – product introduction, quality, manufacturability.
I can identify three processes that PLM systems were focusing in most of implementations I’ve seen:
(1) New Product Introduction / Development (NPI / NPD)
(2) Configuration management (or BoM management)
(3) Change management
